Goya - Saturn Devouring His Children

Goya Saturn Devouring His Children

Francisco Goya - Full name Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (March 30 1746 - April 16,1828) was a Spanish artist to the crown and also a chronicler of history.

Goya’s famous work ‘Saturn Devouring His Son’  is a depiction of the Roman myth of Saturn.  Saturn feared that his children would eventually supplant him and to prevent this, he ate each of them shortly after their birth.  This is one of the paintings that Goya painted directly onto the walls of his own house between 1819 and 1823.  Following Goya’s death, this dark image was transferred onto canvas and can now be found in the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
